College Packing Tips

STORAGE

  • Having lots of storage containers will be your best friend in the dorms, an apartment, or in a house! Sliding bins are perfect for clothing storage underneath your bed.

  • The big IKEA style bags are a lifesaver for moving all of your clothes, shoes, and other items — and they fold up and go underneath your bed once you unpack so they aren’t adding any clutter to your room.

  • Counter top organizers are a great way to have all of your things readily accessible (whether that be makeup, skincare, or pencils/pens), while saving space in your desk for books and folders!

  • A 3-tiered rolling cart is also a great storage item to have. It is such a versatile storage unit that can be used in whatever way you need: a place for a Keurig, dry food storage, or even as a mini vanity.

  • Command hooks/strips are incredibly useful in college. They are perfect for hanging towels, shower caddies, keys, coats, or anything else you could ever need to hang. They are also renter/dorm friendly!

Laundry

  • Everyone in college needs a good laundry bag/hamper. Anything with handles/strap/wheels is perfect for doing laundry in any type of space you may be living in! A laundry bag with a separate container to hold your laundry supplies is great, so that all your laundry needs are in one place.

  • Some laundry necessities are Tide Pods (sooo much easier to carry than a bottle of detergent), Spray n Wash (great for getting stains out and so easy to use), mesh wash bags, dryer sheets, a drying rack, and a steamer!

Bathroom

  • Especially if you are living in the dorms or in an apartment where you share a bathroom, you are going to want a robe or towel wrap! These are perfect from going to and from the bathrooms to shower!

  • Showers shoes are also a NECESSITY for communal showers! You don’t need anything special, just something to wear in the showers to stay clean.

  • A shower caddy is the last necessity you will need for shared/communal bathrooms. It is perfect for holding everything you need for your showers, especially if they have different sections to separate all your items.

Other Necessities

  • The number one recommended necessity for college packing is a good water filter like a Brita. They are great for allowing you to get clean water to drink without having to go to the dining hall (if you are living on campus).

  • Lamps! A lot of the overhead lighting in the dorms and apartments can be very harsh, so lamps are great for helping your space feel a little bit warmer and lighter!

  • Extension cords will be so useful for you! Especially ones that also serve as a power strip with multiple slots for you to use!

  • A mattress topper will be your best friend throughout Recruitment and the school year! You will be so grateful for it every single day when you get home from class and just want a good night's sleep!

  • Pack lots of medication! It’s inevitable that you will get sick at some point during the school year, so be prepared by bringing cold medicine, headache medicine, and anything else you may need.
